Description

The site, occupied by the Church of the Carmine, has been for centuries a religious landmark for the local community, first with the rock church, later with the church of San Marco, and finally with the current sacred building.

The cave church, accessible from the nave and dating back to the twelfth century, was an important place of worship during the Byzantine Empire.
Carved into the rock and with a semicircular shape, still retains traces of frescoes and some tombs carved into the floor.

In the sixteenth century, a sub divo construction (from the Latin under the sky) dedicated to St Mark, was superimposed to the cave church , and for about two centuries, it was considered the most important in the country.
Following the transfer of the brotherhood of the Carmine in the second half of the seventeenth century, the church was soon demolished to make room for, in 1713, to the current one.

The latter, which is accessible through a baroque portal, it has a single nave and houses within a major valuable Baroque altar and two nineteenth-century paddles placed on the two side altars.

In the seventies of the last century it was subjected to numerous extension work on the structure and on the restoration of the works contained in it
