The word Pòppito derives from the Latin "Post Oppidum" which means "outside the walls of the town".
In Salento the term, today, refers to rustic, boorish people and to strangers or foreigners.
When the Romans conquered the region entering Brindisium – Porta d’Oriente in 267 BC, Pòppito was used to refer to someone who lived outside the town;
today it is used by the inhabitants of the so called "Alto Salento" (North Salento), Brindisi, Taranto and Lecce when they refer to the inhabitants of the extreme south of the peninsula.
The web site Pòppito, covers an area to the south of an horizontal line extending across Salento from the East, Otranto – Maglie – Gallipoli to Leuca -de Finibus Terrae-.
The aim of the web site is to reveal the beauty of this part of the world and what it has to offer and help make it better known and appreciated to people beyond our shores.
