Description

The Shrine is located on a former church of the early XVIIth century in turn built on the ruins of an ancient chapel of the XIVth century. Inside, it houses a Byzantine fresco of the eleventh or twelfth century depicting the Virgin and Child.

The existence of the chapel is documented as early as 1452 in reference to a pastoral visit by Bishop Ludovico De Pennis, Bishop of Nardò.

The church was rebuilt between 1913 and 1942 on a project by the architect from Parabita Napoleon Pagliarulo.

The Sanctuary was given the name of Minor Basilica on 1st September 1999 by Pope John Paul II.
The construction has got elements of Romanesque-Byzantine, Romanesque, pugliese ( from Puglia ) and Gothic style.
Typical is the big round rose window historiated and decorated with stained glass with the figure of Christ in the center and the Twelve Apostles. In the
segments, on one side of the whole structure, stands the majestic bell tower, completed in 1976 and built by the Dominicans, keepers of the shrine.

As far as the name Coltura is concerned, it has uncertain origins:
- abbreviation for Madonna of Agriculture;
- etymological origin of the original name of the sacred image of S.M. of the Cuture. It is believed that Cutura comes from Cullura, from the dialect "Cuddura": a cake bread variously decorated with egg, typical of the Easter period.
